About ReefSite & Our Editorial Policy
ReefSite exists to answer one question honestly: what should you actually do with your tank, based on your own numbers? Not a generic rule of thumb, and not a vendor's product funnel. Bioload, not tank size, drives almost every dosing, equipment, and stocking decision, so every calculator on ReefSite runs on your inputs, stays free, and doesn't pick a brand winner by default.
Who writes this
ReefSite's content is written and edited under the byline Finn Sterling, Reef Systems Editor, a disclosed editorial persona rather than a claimed individual with a personal tank history. We're telling you this directly because we'd rather you trust the sourcing behind a claim than an invented biography. Finn Sterling doesn't hold, or claim, any academic or professional aquarium credential. What backs every article instead is the sourcing standard below.
How we research and fact-check
Every specific claim (a dosing ratio, a tank-size threshold, a product spec, a price) is either cited to a real source or explicitly framed as aggregated hobbyist consensus. We don't fabricate first-hand tank experience, invented product complaints, or made-up statistics. In practice that means:
- Chemistry and husbandry claims are cited to manufacturer documentation, published cost data, or a named hobbyist community discussion, e.g. Bulk Reef Supply's own removal guides.
- Numbers without a traceable primary source get labeled "hobbyist consensus" in the article itself, not presented as a settled fact.
- For reviews and buying guides, product pricing, specs, and ratings are pulled from live marketplace data (Amazon, Walmart, manufacturer spec pages) at the time of research. We don't guess from memory or a stale web snippet.
- A documented buyer complaint is a real, findable one. We don't invent a generic "con" just to round out a pros/cons list.
Affiliate disclosure
Some review and buying-guide pages contain affiliate links. If you buy through one, ReefSite may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never determines which product we recommend first. Our calculators and pillar guides are brand-agnostic by design, and a product's affiliate status doesn't move its ranking in a comparison.
Corrections
Reef chemistry, equipment specs, and pricing change. If you find something on ReefSite that's outdated, wrong, or missing a source, we want to fix it. Email corrections@reefdial.com with the article and what's wrong. Corrections and source challenges get reviewed and, when warranted, published as a dated update to the affected article.
