Kalkwasser looks like the obvious cheap option once you understand it: dose calcium hydroxide through your auto top-off instead of plain freshwater, and you replace calcium and alkalinity for free every time your tank evaporates. The catch is right there in that sentence. You're capped by how much your tank evaporates, not by how much your coral actually needs.

How kalkwasser actually works

Kalkwasser is a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide, mixed with RO/DI water and dosed via your auto top-off (ATO) instead of plain freshwater. As it replaces evaporated water, it delivers calcium and raises alkalinity, and it nudges pH upward at the same time, since calcium hydroxide is alkaline. That last part matters more than people expect: it's genuinely useful on a tank fighting chronically low pH.

The real limitation: it's capped by evaporation

A low-demand mixed reef with soft corals and LPS can often run entirely on kalkwasser. A heavily-stocked SPS tank usually can't, because the amount of calcium hydroxide your ATO can safely dissolve into replacement water isn't enough to keep pace with high coral demand. At that point people either supplement with two-part on top of kalkwasser, or drop kalk entirely and switch to two-part or a reactor.

Cost and dosing volume

Kalkwasser is meaningfully cheaper than two-part, especially on SPS-heavy tanks with high demand, since you're mixing your own solution from powder rather than buying pre-made liquid additives by the gallon. The tradeoff is dosing volume: kalkwasser is dilute, so you need a larger reservoir and more daily volume than an equivalent two-part dose delivers.

The failure mode nobody mentions upfront

This is the part worth taking seriously before switching. Kalkwasser dosing depends on your ATO's float switch working correctly. If that float switch sticks or fails, your ATO can dump far more kalkwasser than intended in a short window, which spikes pH hard enough to crash a tank. This isn't a theoretical risk; it's a documented, recurring cause of tank crashes in the hobby. A backup float switch or a dosing limiter isn't optional if you're running kalkwasser through an ATO.

Which one fits your tank

Low to medium demand, mixed reef with soft corals and LPS, and you're already fighting low pH: kalkwasser is a genuinely good fit. Heavy SPS bioload, or you're not comfortable adding a second point of failure to your ATO: two-part is the safer default. Plenty of reefers run both, using kalkwasser to cover baseline demand through evaporation and topping up with two-part for the rest.
