Aiptasia is probably the most common pest in the hobby, and misidentifying it wastes real money on the wrong fix. Get the ID right first, then pick a removal method that matches your infestation size.

Identification: Aiptasia vs. Majano

Aiptasia is pale brown or tan, 1-5cm tall, with a thin vertical stalk and long slender tentacles that taper to a sharp point, per theSea.org's identification guide. It's frequently confused with Majano anemones, which have thicker, rounder, bulb-tipped tentacles rather than slender pointed ones, per ReefJar. The distinction matters beyond appearance: Berghia nudibranchs, the specialist predator covered below, eat Aiptasia but not Majano, so misidentifying the pest means buying a predator that will starve without ever touching your actual problem.

How it spreads

The most common spread mechanism is pedal laceration - per theSea.org, a single Aiptasia can seed dozens of new anemones within a month through fragmentation alone, and scraping or incomplete removal just scatters viable pieces into new colonies. It also spreads via planula larvae released into the water column that settle and grow on new rock, per EWASH. Both mechanisms mean incomplete removal, not just failure to remove, is what lets an outbreak spread.

Chemical treatment options

Joe's Juice ($9.99 for 20mL) is applied by syringe directly to the anemone's mouth; the manufacturer calls it a "patent pending mixture" and doesn't disclose exact ingredients. Red Sea's Aiptasia-X (60mL, enough for roughly 100 anemones at 2-3mL each, 90% rating from 113 BRS reviews) works differently. It's a thick adhesive gel the anemone mistakes for food and ingests, which seals its mouth before it implodes within minutes.

A direct head-to-head review on the Bay Area Reefers forum found both products similarly effective when applied correctly, but preferred Aiptasia-X's luer-lock syringe and rubber plunger over Joe's Juice's leak-prone plastic plunger.

Biological control, and why sequencing matters

Berghia nudibranchs are dietary specialists that eat only Aiptasia, confirmed independently by Reef2Reef and Saltwater Aquarium Blog. That specialization is also their weakness: without an Aiptasia food source, Berghia will starve within roughly a week, per Salty Underground. Killing your Aiptasia chemically before releasing Berghia removes their only food source and causes them to starve before establishing. If you're going biological, go biological first.

Peppermint shrimp are the other commonly recommended option, but effectiveness is widely reported as inconsistent. Only certain species, Lysmata wurdemanni and L. boggessi, reliably eat Aiptasia, per ReefJar, and retailers don't always sell the correct species under the common name.

Pick one lane. Chemical treatment for a light, spot-treatable infestation. Berghia, released before any chemical treatment, for a heavy whole-tank outbreak. Don't run both at once.

Prevention

Quarantine new coral and rock for a minimum of 2-4 weeks before adding it to your display, per Tidal Gardens. Dips kill visible adult anemones but not eggs, so a "clean" dipped frag can still produce a next generation later, which is exactly why quarantine duration matters more than the dip itself.

The bottom line

Confirm it's actually Aiptasia before buying anything. Match your treatment to your infestation size, chemical for a few visible anemones, biological for a real outbreak, and never combine the two in the wrong order. Quarantine everything new regardless, since that's what actually stops the next outbreak before it starts.
