What Size Protein Skimmer Do I Need?

The gallon number printed on a skimmer's box is a marketing shortcut, not a real capacity spec. Manufacturers can't measure your bioload directly, so they proxy it with tank size instead. A 40-gallon tank holding one shrimp and a 40-gallon SPS tank crammed with fish have wildly different organic loads. A box rated "up to 40 gallons" doesn't know the difference.

The rated-capacity gap is real and measurable

This isn't just hobbyist suspicion. Bulk Reef Supply ran an independent lab test, BRStv Investigates, measuring actual air draw on several popular skimmers with a digital flow meter at multiple water depths. The Reef Octopus 202-S is rated by its manufacturer at 880 liters per hour of air draw. BRS measured 312 to 350 LPH in their own test rig, roughly a third of the spec sheet number.

That gap doesn't necessarily mean the skimmer underperforms in practice. It means the printed spec and the tested real-world number aren't the same thing, and sizing decisions based purely on the box number are sizing decisions based on marketing copy. What actually determines the right size

Four variables matter more than raw gallons:

Size for your combined display and sump volume, not just the display tank. Forgetting to add sump volume into the calculation is one of the most common sizing mistakes, per Bubble Magus's own sizing guide, and it quietly leaves your skimmer working against more water than you accounted for.

Two sizing systems, and why the numbers look so different

Brands don't agree on how to publish bioload adjustments, and the gap between systems is bigger than most buyers expect. Red Sea publishes explicit tiered ratings per model:

Notice the heavy-bioload rating sits at roughly a third of the light-bioload number on both models. Bubble Magus's own general buying guide recommends a flat multiplier instead: size for 1.5 times your tank volume if lightly stocked, 2 times or more if heavily stocked. Individual Bubble Magus product listings, like the Curve 5, still publish their own light/medium/heavy tiers on the spec sheet (see Protein Skimmer Ratings Explained for those exact numbers), so the flat multiplier is buying-stage guidance, not a substitute for a specific unit's own rating.

These two systems aren't interchangeable, and treating them as the same number will leave you either under- or over-buying. Use the manufacturer's own bioload tier for the specific unit when one is published, since it reflects testing on that model. Fall back to the 1.5 to 2 times multiplier only when a skimmer doesn't publish tiered ratings at all.

Common sizing mistakes

Undersizing for a heavy bioload is the most common failure. Buying against a light-bioload gallon number for an SPS-dominant or heavily-fed FOWLR tank leaves a skimmer working far outside the range it was actually rated for. Oversizing has its own cost. A drastically oversized skimmer on a lightly-stocked tank can strip nutrients and trace elements the tank still needs, and it's harder to dial in since there isn't enough organic load to sustain a stable foam head.

The safer error, if you have to guess, is slightly undersized rather than drastically oversized. A skimmer running a bit under capacity just keeps up more slowly. How to size yours, step by step

  1. Add your display tank volume and sump volume together for total system volume.
  2. Rate your bioload honestly as light, medium, or heavy based on fish load and feeding, not tank size alone.
  3. Check the specific model's published bioload tiers first, if the manufacturer provides one.
  4. If no tiered rating exists, apply 1.5x your total volume for light bioload or 2x for heavy bioload as a fallback.
  5. Confirm the physical footprint fits your sump's skimmer section before buying, not after it arrives.
