Protein Skimmer Ratings Explained: Light vs. Heavy Bioload

The same physical skimmer, two very different numbers
Several manufacturers publish a light-bioload and heavy-bioload rating for the same unit, and the spread between them is large. AquaMaxx rates its FC-180 at 250 gallons for light bioload and 130 gallons for heavy bioload, a 48% drop on identical hardware. Bubble Magus's Curve 5 goes from 120 gallons (light) to 55 gallons (heavy), and Nyos's Quantum 160 runs 250/150/75 across light/medium/heavy tiers. The unit didn't get smaller. The assumption about how much waste it needs to process did.
Reef Octopus, by contrast, publishes a single number with no bioload breakdown at all, for example "up to 210 gallons" on the Classic 150INT. That's not necessarily a worse skimmer. It does mean you have no way to tell from the spec sheet alone which bioload tier that number assumes.

Which number should you actually buy for
For a reef tank carrying live coral, sized-up fish, and real feeding, assume you're in the heavy-bioload tier even if the retailer's headline number is the light-bioload figure. A Reef2Reef sizing discussion echoes this directly: most published skimmer ratings assume a light bioload, and hobbyists commonly discount published numbers accordingly when the tank is a stocked reef rather than a lightly-stocked fish-only system.
Undersized beats oversized, within reason
Bubble Magus's own sizing guide makes a point worth repeating: it's generally better to undersize a skimmer than to oversize one. An oversized skimmer often can't form a stable foam head without enough waste load to work against. A skimmer running below its rated capacity still functions, just with more of the nutrient-export burden shifted onto water changes, refugium, or filter media. A skimmer running well above its rated capacity may not skim effectively at all.
Decision order: get your target capacity from the sizing calculator, then shop against each brand's heavy-bioload number specifically, not its headline figure.
The bottom line
Don't compare skimmers on their headline rated gallons alone. Find the heavy-bioload tier where a manufacturer publishes one, and treat an undisclosed single-number rating as unverified until you can find a bioload breakdown elsewhere. When genuinely unsure between two sizes, the safer buy is the smaller one that still clears your calculated target, not the larger one "for headroom."
