Reef Tank Bioload Explained
"Bioload" gets used constantly on this site and across the hobby, usually without ever being defined. It's the total waste in your system, uneaten food, decomposing organics, and livestock waste, per FishLab's definition. It's not a fish count, and it's not your tank's gallon rating.
Why tank size is a poor proxy
A lightly stocked 20-gallon nano reef produces much less waste than a heavily stocked 75-gallon mixed reef with a dozen fish getting fed multiple times a day, a contrast that comes up repeatedly in Reef2Reef discussion on heavy bioload tanks and when bioload becomes an issue, where the consensus is that nitrate climbs once "your filtration system can't handle" the bioload "or is having a hard time exporting waste." Ignoring bioload is a leading reason hobbyists run into nitrate trouble, and the mechanism is feeding and stocking choices outrunning filtration capacity, not gallons on a spec sheet.
The four real drivers
- Feeding frequency and amount. More food in means more waste out. Fish excrete ammonia in rough proportion to how much they're fed, per a review of ammonia production and excretion in fish published in the Journal of Comparative Physiology B, the mechanistic link between how much you feed and how fast nitrate climbs.
- Fish size and count. Larger fish and more fish both mean more waste, but neither alone tells you the total, since a single large predator can outweigh several small fish combined.

- Coral and invertebrate load. Most corals add little to bioload directly, but anemones are a real exception and contribute meaningfully, per community discussion on Nano-Reef.
What this means for equipment sizing
Bubble Magus's own 2024 sizing guide recommends 1.5x tank volume for light bioload, 2x or more for heavy reef bioload, and an additional 0.5x on top of that for predator-heavy tanks. The bottom line
Stop sizing equipment and stocking plans off tank volume alone. Feeding habits, fish size, filtration, and the occasional anemone all move the real number more than gallons do. When two tanks are the "same size" on paper, don't assume they carry the same load.
